The UN Mapper of the month - December 2022

Frans Schutz, Frans S in OSM, is our mapper of the month for December. Frans is a retiree living in Hulst, the Netherlands, devoting his time to validating data, working to increase the quality of OSM, and helping new contributors improve their skills.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello, my name is Frans Schutz and I live in Hulst, the Netherlands.I am retired and have been involved in HOTOSM for about 8 years. Nowadays as a validator (member of the Global Validators team) in disaster mapping projects.

I am also involved as ad hoc team member (user) in the further development of the Tasking Manager. Besides validating, I spend a lot of time advising how (new) mappers can improve their mapping skills if they are underperforming. I also regularly review mapping projects when requested, using OSMcha.

How did you know about UN Mappers?
Through posts on HOT's Slack channel, I got involved in the UN Mappers' activities.

When do you map?
In recent years I have been working "full time" as a validator as far as you can work full time as a retiree.

Do you enjoy mapping? Why?
I get satisfaction from knowing that my contributions matter.

In which countries do you map the most?
Hard to say where I am most active validating. I have been involved for a few years in Tanzania with the Crowd2Map Tanzania team until they had enough validators of their own.

See here where I am (have been) involved. Very varied and reflective of areas with earthquakes, landslides, floods, hurricanes, etc.: https://yosmhm.neis-one.org/?Frans%20S More information at http://hdyc.neis-one.org/?Frans%20S
